Passionate and innovative, Shane Allenger stands out as a rising artist in today’s ever-evolving music scene. His journey from the busy streets of Kingston, Jamaica, to his recent solo debut weaves a fascinating tale of musical exploration. We recently sat down with this multi-talented artist to discuss his past, present, and future in the ever-evolving world of melody.
Shane, thanks for chatting with us today. Let’s jump right in. Your new solo single, “A Sweet Dream,” came out on July 5, 2024. What inspired this track?
Thanks for having me. You know, it’s funny – “A Sweet Dream” actually came from a weird dream I had one morning. I woke up feeling this mix of unease and peace, if that makes sense. It got me thinking about all the negativity in the world versus the little moments of joy in our personal lives. The song starts with this excellent piano bit and then builds up with these harmonies that I think really capture that emotional rollercoaster.
Interesting! Now, let’s rewind a bit. How did you first get into music?
[Laughs] Well, according to my mum, I’ve been singing since before I could talk properly. She says I used to wake everyone up with my “concerts.” I guess you could say I started my career in diapers! But my first real gig? That was when I was nine. Talk about nerve-wracking!
Nine? Wow! How has your Jamaican background influenced your sound?
Well, growing up in Kingston was like being in a constant music festival. You’d hear everything – reggae, ska, rocksteady, dancehall, you name it. That mix really shaped how I approach music. I’m not picky about genres because to me, music is life. It’s like breathing, you know?
You’ve been in the duo Hi Tide for over 20 years. What made you decide to go solo?
Don’t get me wrong, Hi Tide is still an amazing ride with my cousin Sean. We’ve put out like, what, twelve albums? But I felt this itch to try something on my own, to see what I could do without the Hi Tide “label,” if you will. This solo thing? It’s just me being me, Shane Allenger, no filters.
Speaking of your solo stuff, how would you describe it to someone who’s never heard your music?
Hmm… I’d say it’s like… heart-to-heart conversations set to music. It’s real experiences, maybe jazzed up a bit for dramatic effect. [Chuckles] I hope when people listen, it takes them back to their childhood a bit, sparks their imagination. You know, lets them feel all the feels in a safe way.
What’s on the horizon for Shane Allenger?
I’m knee-deep in working on a full album right now. Probably gonna have 10, maybe 13 original tracks. Can’t wait to share more of my solo stuff with everyone. And of course, Hi Tide is still going strong. It’s a bit crazy, but in the best way possible!
Sounds exciting! How do you juggle your solo work with Hi Tide?
[Laughs] With a lot of coffee and very little sleep! Nah, it’s challenging but rewarding. Hi Tide is such a big part of me, and this solo gig lets me explore different sides of my musicality. It’s all about finding that balance, you know? And remembering why I love both projects.
Last question – what message would you like to leave with your fans and our readers?
[Pauses thoughtfully] You know, we’ve got so much to be grateful for, but we can’t get complacent. Winning one race doesn’t mean we’re done. Our world? It needs more love, and that’s on all of us. It starts with you, with me, with everyone. We’re all in this together.
