Rock is an incredibly flexible genre, morphing and shifting according to the artist’s creativity. It’s led to many rock sub-genres, among which is the fascinating “Spectra Rock,” spearheaded by New York-based band SAVARRE. Their latest single, “Unbeautiful,” has just dropped, and naturally, we got curious to see what all the commotion was about.
The creation of their genre is a testament to the band’s defiant energy, refusing to be fitted into a mold. They pride themselves on their uncompromising authenticity, making their ideals and ideas the focal point of their music. This essentially boils down to sharply written songs that address topics the band is passionate about, and “Unbeautiful” is an excellent example of this.
Between its rolling, rocking guitar riffs and melodically driven lyrics, SAVARRE put on a performance that’s difficult to forget. It’s a fascinating mix of musical elements you don’t usually see together, as they clash entirely, resulting in disharmony. With SAVARRE, however, it’s practically their modus operandi, and the result isn’t just palatable but shockingly enjoyable.
Despite many of its elements creating dissonance, I found myself bobbing my head to the music. The cymbals on the track are a medley of crashing, sharp noise, but they fit perfectly within the single. A certain chaotic energy to the mix and arrangement makes it all work, a careful method to the madness. Most importantly, it makes for music that has a message but is fun to listen to.
The songwriting is incredibly sharp, with subtle jabs at the perception of women within society. Leading woman Shannon Denise Evans is an accomplished singer-songwriter, composer, novelist, and playwright, and in “Unbeautiful,” it shows. Her witticisms and observations are poignant, standing out while avoiding common writing pitfalls like generalizations or generic style.
It all works perfectly with the song’s overall tone, bringing plenty of powerful ideas together and wrapping them up with fantastic instrumentation. Many elements of “Unbeautiful” are far more catchy than they have any right to be, and we enjoyed every moment. Loud, shimmering, and powerful, the song creates an atmosphere that’s difficult to match.
If there’s one other undeniable strength of SAVARRE and “Unbeautiful,” they have personality and musical talent in spades. With a band concept that puts individuality and creativity first, it’s no surprise that this seeps through every idea the band explores. “Unbeautiful” does this through careful arrangement and synchronization.
Overall, we have to say we were presently surprised by the single, along with its fascinating ideas in “Spectra Rock.” It’s challenging to dig through the slog that tends to get released today, but it’s nice to see bands like SAVARRE venturing out of their comfort zone to create something new in their genre. Moreover, they’re doing it out of passion, and the results make this clear to all.
Are you a fan of more avant-garde rock styles, or maybe you’re just a fan of good writing in music? If so, you don’t want to miss this release. It’s something special, a message, and a fun time; we can’t recommend it enough. It’s available on Spotify, so stream it today!
