Why is he so smooth? Why is he so different? Is this where the industry is heading? Although many music artists have a unique stories, I’m not sure if there is one quite as unique as Julian Quander’s story.
So, let’s get this straight; he goes out to China to pursue music, starts his record label JQ Nation, and is now rocking the music industry globally with his new single called “Never Let the Love Stop” featuring Champagne Duane. This kid is something out of the ordinary.
In a recent interview with Julian Quander, we sat down with him and asked him a few questions regarding his music, life, and plans.
They say you’re the next crooner to hit the big stage. Who are your influences?
Musically speaking, I would have to go by era. I have so many influences, but if I were to name a few, it would be Michael Jackson, Donny Hathaway, Luther Vandross, and Stevie Wonder.
How would you describe your music?
I would describe my music as somewhere between Soul, R&B, and Pop: soul Pop and B. There we go. I got my genre now y’all. I think in this day in age we need more positive music. Can we take a break from all the violence and cursing in music?
My music is clean. You aren’t going to get any X-rated stuff out of me. That’s just not who I am.
Tell us about Never Let the Love Stop. What’s it all about?
Never Let the Love Stop is a fun song about telling your mama about a girl you met and doing everything just like her. As men, we often like women with the same qualities as our mothers, and for women, it could be vice versa.
Is there a special lady in your life right now?
Of course. Haha. She’s special. She knows who she is.
Is your mom a special lady?
Absolutely. I am blessed to have a wonderful mom and dad. They’re always supportive and constantly ask when I am coming home to visit.
Why China, Julian? What brought you there?
China’s been my home since 2010. I came out here for a music opportunity. I just wanted more performance experience, and I wanted something completely different than what I was experiencing back in the USA.
What’s the big goal you want to achieve within music?
A Grammy award would be nice. It takes a lot of work to achieve it, but I believe with my team and skill set, I can get there one day.
What has been your biggest obstacle so far in getting your music going?
Me…I’ve been my biggest obstacle. It takes a certain amount of confidence to really
pursue the road of becoming a music artist and entrepreneur, and it’s not built overnight. It takes years and years of dedication and becoming business-minded as well. It’s really a lonely journey because only you can feed the energy.
Speaking of business, we heard about your own independent record label in China.
Yes, it’s called JQ Nation.
When was it established?
It was established in 2010, but I didn’t officially register it in China until 2017.
What is the initial goal for your record label?
To win big and give opportunities for other artists to do shows in
China as well, but that’s in the foreseeable future. Right now, I have to establish myself more. It’s grind time for me.
What advice would you give to others who want to pursue this road in music?
Take chances. You never know where life will take you. Be positive in times of adversity.
Is there any message for your supporters out there?
It’s been a long time coming. Thank you all for standing by me all this time. We’re going to ride this journey together and have boatloads of fun! Your boy is coming.
