As my video call connected with Josi C, I was greeted by a warm smile and the buzz of New York City life in the background. Born Jose Cabrera in the Dominican Republic, Josi has become a rising star in the Latin music scene. Over the next hour, our screens bridged the distance as we dove into his musical journey, creative process, and the stories behind his infectious tunes.
Hey Josi, thanks for making time for this chat. How’s New York treating you today?
Josi: (adjusting his headphones) Hey! New York’s always got that energy, you know? Even through the screen, you can probably feel it.
Definitely. So, let’s start with your music roots. How’d it all begin for you?
Josi: Oh man, it goes way back. Picture this – I’m four years old, standing in Juan Luis Guerra’s children’s choir. Got this candle in my hand, singing “Ojala Que Llueva Cafe del Campo” in front of a packed house. That moment? It was like lightning struck. I just knew.
That’s quite a start! How would you describe your sound now?
Josi: (leans back, thinking) It’s like… you know when you’re at a beach party back home in DR? It starts chill, right? That’s my music. It’s got that laid-back vibe, but then it builds. By the end, you’re in full-on fiesta mode. It’s a mix of everything – old school Latin, New York hustle, all of it.
I’ve had “Una Noche Mas” on repeat lately. What’s the story there?
Josi: (grinning) Glad you like it! “Una Noche Mas” captures that intense longing for one more night with someone special, blending passion with uncertainty. Movie Warriors did an amazing job bringing these emotions to life in the music video.
And your new single, “PDR” – what inspired that one?
Josi: “PDR” is about being totally caught up in someone. You try to walk away, but you keep coming back. It’s that magnetic pull, you know? I really dug deep for that one.
I noticed “Luna y Mar” has a different feel. What’s the backstory?
Josi: (smiling) ‘Luna y Mar’ is really meaningful to me. It’s a love song with ocean vibes, and I embedded a little piece of my heart in the last 10 seconds. I just hope everyone can feel the love I put into it.
Ooh, I’ll have to check that out. So what’s cooking in the studio now?
Josi: (leans in, excited) I’m working on this track called “Otra Dimension.” It’s about that electric connection with someone – like, out-of-this-world attraction. The beat is wild – think galactic meets sexy meets danceable. Oh, and I’ve got some remixes coming for “PDR” and this unreleased track “A Palo Limpio.” It’s gonna be fire!
Sounds awesome. Last question – what do you hope people feel when they hear your music?
Josi: (pauses, thoughtful) I want them to feel it all – joy, love, that urge to dance. But mostly? I want my music to be part of their story. Like, years from now, they hear one of my songs and it takes them right back to a special moment. That’s the dream, you know?
As our video call wound down, Josi’s passion for his craft was completely visible, even through the screen. His unique blend of Latin rhythms and heartfelt lyrics isn’t just music – it’s a bridge between cultures, emotions, and experiences. Keep an eye on Josi C’s social media for upcoming releases and shows. If our chat was any indication, this is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting musical journey.
